Happy New Year!
That’s right! It’s officially 2018 and you know what that means…it’s time to pick those New Year’s resolutions! Maybe you need to trade the pecan pie for a pair of running shoes, or perhaps it’s time to make some much needed space in your life, by decluttering. It doesn’t matter what areas you need to work on. Today, we are going to focus on how to pick out your core resolutions for the year.
Take a look at the BIG picture.
For this step it’s a good idea to pull out some pen and paper. I am a planner girl, so the easiest way for me to make decisions is to brain dump and get it ALL out there. Write down what your long term goals are. Where do you hope to see yourself in five or even ten years? This is all about the big dreams. It should be things like: successfully owning and operating a business, reaching the top level of your career, producing an album, creating a fashion line, etc. Don’t hold back! This is your chance to be honest with yourself about what you want to do “when you grow up”.
I’m going to use my goals as an example here. Here are a couple of my long term, big picture goals:
1. A successful blog and brand that becomes my full time career
2. Being in the best health possible for my body and life.
Break it down.
Once you have your BIG dreams down in black and white, it’s time to turn those into small, actionable steps. It’s easy to say the big goals out loud, but it’s not so easy to break those down into smaller goals. This part is absolutely necessary though. If you only focus on the big picture you are destined to fail. You need to have items on a to do list that you can check off as you complete them.
Continuing with my example, here is how I have broken down my BIG goals into baby steps:
- A successful blog and brand that becomes my full time career.
- Create unique content to post at least 2 times a week.
- Practice and study photography, in order to improve photo quality.
- Engage with your social media following on a daily basis.
- Being in the best health possible for my body and life.
- Workout 3-4 times every week.
- Record the food you eat daily.
- Drink at least 8 glasses of water daily.
Don’t overdo it.
This one is super important! If you overwhelm yourself with too many goals at once you are setting yourself up for failure. Start with a top three and once you have either accomplished that goal or established that healthy habit, you can begin building upon it. I am guilty of diving in head first, when it comes to making goals. In the past, I have had an all or nothing attitude, but that didn’t get me very far. It’s important to not get burned out to quickly.
It’s also important to reward yourself. If you have gone a whole month without touching the office pastry basket, then you deserve a mani/pedi! If you have gotten up early three days a week for six weeks, to run five miles, then you deserve a massage!
So, just to keep up with my example here are the top three resolutions I am starting out the year with:
- Write at least two blog posts a week.
- Workout 3-4 times every week.
- Engage with my social media following daily.
After I feel I have established a habit with these, I will add some more.
Now you know my New Year’s resolutions. What are yours?
Until next time!
