Hey y’all! It’s officially February and that means it’s time for the lovey-dovey stuff. I know, I know. Some of you may dislike Valentine’s Day and all of the hearts and love that come with it. That’s totally okay! This post isn’t going to be about Valentine’s day. You can use these DIY date night ideas for any day you would like. We have been enjoying these home dates, throughout the winter, because there are some nights when it is just too cold to get out.
Recipe for at home date night
My favorite at home date nights follow the same basic recipe. That recipe includes the following ingredients:
- Drinks (optional)
Mix them all together and get ready to have a cozy and romantic night in your own living room!
This is probably one of my favorites. We enjoy playing active video games and we also like pulling out the board games from time to time. So following the recipe I gave you above, this is how I put together a fun game night date.
Game night is casual, and it calls for snacks and appetizers! Wings, potato skins, chips and spinach dip. These are the perfect refreshments, as you battle against your significant other. If you rather not dirty up the kitchen, the easiest way to handle food for this type of date is ordering pizza delivery.
Games of your choosing! If you like board games, then pull out all of the two player games you have and spread out on the floor or at the dining room table. If you prefer games of the audio and video variety, then grab your controllers and press play. Justin has a VR headset so a lot of times we will play games on that. We also have fun playing Just Dance, using the X-Box Kinect.
Like I mentioned before, game night is casual. Jeans and a t-shirt are acceptable attire and a little friendly competition is in the air. Make it interesting by betting on the winner of each game! Example: The winner of the next round, gets a foot massage from the loser. If you are adding the optional adult beverages to the date, then you can make a drinking game out of it. Loser takes a shot!
Does a movie night seem boring to you? Well, it doesn’t have to be! Spice up your normal “Netflix and chill” with a few little adjustments.
Create your own popcorn concoctions! Start with the movie theater butter popcorn. Then add bowls of M&M’s, chocolate covered raisins, chopped nuts, flavored syrups, and different popcorn seasonings. Make it sweet or make it savory. Maybe, make a little bit of both. Get creative and taste test each other’s creations. Don’t forget a side of Twizzlers and Skittles!
Obviously, the main entertainment is going to be a movie. If you and your date have a hard time deciding on a movie (like me and my husband), then you can always use a random movie generator to make the decision for you. Branch out from Netflix. Try hitting up your local Redbox, or checking out the the movie rentals online. If you want to change it up, try a Mystery Science Theater 3000 style, move night. You pick a really cheesy, old movie, and then spend the whole time making fun of it.
Turn out all the lights, pull out all the blankets and pillows you have, and put on your PJs. Cuddle up on the couch and let the show begin!
Since you are going to be a couch potato, you don’t want to waste time making drinks. Movie night is a good time to break out the beer and hard cider.
Just because you aren’t going out to a fancy restaurant, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the same experience from the comfort of your own home. Recreate the experience of a fine dining establishment. You can even break out the good dishes for this one!
Pinterest is full of great recipe ideas. I’m sure you have a board dedicated to the ones you like most. If not, feel free to check out mine: Main Dishes. Pick out your favorite recipe and then get cooking, but not by yourself. This date begins in the kitchen. Enjoy each other’s company as your prepare the meal together. Create a three course meal. A salad, an entree, and a decadent dessert.
The main entertainment for the evening (after the cooking) is the conversation. Ask each other questions, flirt, and if you have been together for several years, reminisce about your early dating days. After dinner, slow dance in your living room to your favorite romantic songs.
Light some candles, and put on a record (if you don’t have a vinyl record player, then iTunes will do). Dress up. He can wear slacks and a tie and you can wear your little black dress. Sit at your dining room table for once and use real silverware and dishes.
A nice wine or champagne. Since you are saving money by skipping the fancy restaurant, you should splurge on the bottle of bubbly. Something you both will enjoy, and go ahead an finish off the bottle. Cheers to a romantic date night at home!
Until next time!
